Steve Kline Hurls Season's 4th No Hitter, Blanks Wyandotte!
Jubulation reigned in Berwyn on a crisp, autumn Saturday afternoon,
as Steve Kline became the first Berwyn Baron to throw a no-hitter,
beating the Wyandotte Camels 3-0. Although not the 1st no-hitter
in franchise history (Jim Bunning and Jerry Koosman turned the
trick for the old San Diego team), it is the first in the 3+ years
the team has been in Berwyn.
The no-hitter didn't end on a third strike or fly out, however, because while
Kline was mowing Camel hitters down, Jim Perry was doing the same to the Baron batters. Berwyn picked up only three hits through 8 shutout innings from Perry. Meanwhile, the only Camel to reach base in 9 innings was Billy
Grabarkewitz, who walked in the 6th. Perry was pinch-hit for in
the top of the the 9th, and George Culver came on to face Berwyn.
Leadoff hitter Bobby Darwin hit a grounder to Grabarkewitz, who
bobbled it, then threw too late to get Darwin. Don Money sacrificed
him to 2nd, then Johnny Oates was intentionally walked. Roger
Metzger was due to bat, but the Barons went to their bench for
Jim Hickman, who promptly took Culver deep over the leftfield
fence for a 3-run game-winning blast. Baron players were confused
who to jump on first, Hickman for his HR, or Kline for the no-hitter.
They finally piled on both, as the crowd stood and cheered.
