Bob
Gibson runs scoreless streak to 52 innings!
12/30/97
Bob Gibson was acquired by the Cooperstown Cardinals in the off season to provide a push for the AL West title. What Gibson has done is way beyond the dreams of Cardinal management. Gibson is 8-2 with 5 shutouts in his 11 starts, with a 1.22 ERA, currently second to Tommy John of Hopewell.
Gibson recently went through a most incredible run of effectiveness,
tossing 52 consecutive scoreless innings! Gibson allowed a run
to Winchester in a 1-0 loss in October. The following charts
his progress from that point:
November
Winchester, 1-0 loss, 7 scoreless innings
Wisconsin, 2-0 shutout
Snowflake, 3-0 shutout
at Winchester, 4-0 shutout
December
at Louisville, 3-0 shutout
at Tysons Corner, 9-0 shutout
South Shore, 8-1 win, Bob Oliver singles in Steve Braun in the 1st inning.
This gave Gibson 52 consecutive scoreless innings. What is really amazing is what Gibson did next:
Louisville, 7.1 scoreless innings before leaving with an injury
at Satellite Beach, 13-1 win, scoreless for the first 8 innings
What if Gibson had not allowed Braun to score? His streak would have been at 76.1 innings, completely unheard of!
