Cleveland, Ohio. July 17. It is usually the National League stars who shine the brightest in the CTMBL All-Star Game. Heading into today's game at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, The NL held a 5-1 lead in the Mid-Summer Classic. Bob Feller, Indian pitching great, was on hand to throw out the first pitch, and the overflow crowd sat back to watch the action. They were not disappointed. The starting pitchers, Sandy Koufax of the Phillies and Turk Farrell of the Nationals, gave all indications that this game, like most of the previous all-star tilts, would be dominated by the pitchers. Koufax departed after two scoreless frames having not allowed a hit. Farrell pitched out of a first inning jam, and kept the NL off the scoreboard through three innings. Farrell got help from his catcher, Ellie Howard, in the third. Howard called for a pitchout, and then gunned down Maury Wills on a steal attempt. With Dick Donovan of the Mets on the mound in the bottom of the fourth, things started to get a little crazy. Donovan allowed singles to Roberto Clemente and Felipe Alou with one out. NL Manager Lowrey called on Steve Barber of the Phils to face Willie McCovey. McCovey singled in Clemente with the game's first run. Elston Howard then sent the pro-AL crowd into a frenzy when he launched a Barber pitch into the left field seats for a 4-0 AL advantage. They weren't done yet, either. Orlando Cepeda of the Cards booted Tony Taylor's grounder with two out. It proved to be costly, as Washington's Vada Pinson followed with a two-run homer to right field. Sporting a 6-0 lead, the AL nearly gave it all back the next inning. The Yankees' John Buzhardt allowed the first two batters to reach, and was then pulled by AL Manager Cole in favor of Cleveland's Al Downing. Downing walked the Mets' Jim Gentile to load the bases, and then Cepeda unloaded them with a booming triple to right center. Johnny Callison was lifted for pinch-hitter Hank Aaron. Hammerin' Hank compounded Downing's nightmare before the homefolk with a two-run clout to left, and it was suddenly 6-5. The American Leaguers responded, though, in the home 6th. Howard and Ken Boyer singled in succession off of the Cubs' Ralph Terry. Both runners moved up a base on Aaron's bobble of Boyer's hit. Manager Lowrey brought his infield in with the White Sox Bobby Richardson at the plate. Richardson grounded to Nellie Fox, and the runners stayed put. Pinson got a free pass to load the bases. Pete Ward was announced as a pinch-hitter, and the Phillies' Gary Peters was called on to get him out. Instead, Mickey Mantle came out of the AL dugout, and received a pat on the back from the passing Ward. As The Mick, bad knees and all, stood in to face Peters, the crowd stood as one in anticipation of something special. Mantle flied deep enough to left to score Howard, and when Clemente followed with his third hit, the AL was up 8-5. The Nationals got one back in the 7th when Zoilo Versalles walked with the bases loaded, and it could have been worse, but Ron Perranoski of the Orioles fanned Yogi Berra with the bases loaded. The AL then put the game away in the last of the 8th against Philadelphia's Dick Radatz. Boston's Dick Groat singled with the bases loaded to score Pinson and Clemente. Don Drysdale hurled a scoreless 9th, and the American League wins the highest scoring All-Star Game in CTMBL history, 10-6. Elston Howard (2-4, HR, 3 rbi) wins the Most Valuable Player Award, and will drive home in a 1963 Ford Crown Victoria Skyliner. John Buzhardt of the Yankees was the winning pitcher, while Dick Donovan of the Mets was the loser.
